Exterior Foundation Waterproofing

Excavation-based exterior waterproofing that applies a continuous membrane and drainage layer to the outside of the foundation wall.

Exterior Foundation Waterproofing — Stop water at the outside of the wall before it ever reaches the interior.

About Our Exterior Foundation Waterproofing Service

Exterior foundation waterproofing addresses water at its source — the outside face of the foundation wall. We excavate down to the footing, clean and inspect the wall, apply a continuous waterproofing membrane, and install a drainage layer that carries groundwater away from the foundation rather than letting it press against it. This is the most direct way to stop water from ever entering the wall, and it protects the concrete itself from saturation and freeze-thaw damage through Connecticut winters.

Signs You May Need This

  • Seepage high on the basement wall, above the floor
  • Wall saturation after rain with no obvious interior source
  • Deteriorating or spalling concrete on the exterior face
  • Old tar-based coating that has dried, cracked, or pulled away

What Causes It

  • Missing, aged, or failed exterior waterproofing membrane
  • No drainage layer — water pools against the wall and finds a way in
  • Hydrostatic pressure against the exterior face of the foundation
  • Backfill that retains water instead of draining it

How We Approach It

1

Excavation to footing

We carefully dig alongside the foundation down to the footing, protecting utilities and landscaping as we go, to expose the full wall.

2

Membrane application

A dimpled waterproofing membrane is applied to the cleaned wall, creating a continuous barrier and a drainage air-gap in one layer.

3

Drainage layer & backfill

Clean drainage stone and a footing drain carry water down and away, and the trench is backfilled so the area sheds water rather than collecting it.

Things to Consider

Exterior waterproofing is the most thorough fix because it stops water outside the wall, but it requires excavation access. On homes with decks, patios, walkways, or finished landscaping tight against the foundation, we plan the dig around those constraints. Where excavation isn't practical on one side, we may pair exterior work with interior management on the limited-access side.

Our Process

1

Exposure

We excavate to the footing and inspect the wall condition.

2

Prep & membrane

Wall is cleaned and the dimpled membrane is applied continuously.

3

Drainage

Footing drain and clean stone are installed to carry water away.

4

Backfill & restore

We backfill, compact, and leave the area neat and graded.
